Free iPhone for Students

There’s no separate “student phone program” — but millions of students already qualify for a free government iPhone through Lifeline. Here’s how the paths actually work (and the myth to ignore).

⚡ Quick answer

Students get free iPhones through the same Lifeline program as everyone else — there’s no student-only application. You qualify the same four ways: SNAP, Medicaid, another qualifying program, or income at/below 135% FPL ($21,546/year for a single person in 2026). Most students working part-time jobs clear the income path easily.

🚨

The Pell Grant Myth — Read This First

Dozens of spammy sites claim a Federal Pell Grant alone qualifies you for Lifeline. It doesn’t. Pell Grants qualified for the ACP — the Affordable Connectivity Program, which ended June 1, 2024. Lifeline’s official qualifying programs are SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing, Veterans Pension, Tribal programs, or the income path. Any site telling you “Pell Grant = free iPhone” is recycling dead ACP content. Don’t trust it — and don’t pay anyone who promises it.

How students actually qualify

4 Real Paths to a Free iPhone as a Student

🛒

1. Through SNAP

Many college students qualify for SNAP (food stamps) — especially those working 20+ hours/week or in work-study. SNAP enrollment auto-qualifies you for Lifeline, no income math needed.

2. Through Medicaid

Students on Medicaid (including those covered under a parent’s plan or state expanded Medicaid) qualify automatically. Your Medicaid card or award letter is your proof.

3. Through Low Income

Earn $21,546/year or less as a single person (2026)? You qualify — and most part-time student jobs land well under that. Pay stubs or a tax return prove it.

4. Through Your Household

Lifeline is per household. If anyone you live with (and share expenses with) is on SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI, the household qualifies — including you as the applicant.

🎓 Do you qualify as a student?

1. Are you (or your household) enrolled in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or housing assistance?

💻 What about a tablet or laptop for schoolwork?

Lifeline itself covers phone service — but several of the providers above also offer discounted tablets to Lifeline customers (separate promotions, stock-dependent). There’s no current federal free-laptop program since ACP ended; beware any site promising one. Your campus library and financial-aid office may have device-lending programs worth checking too.

Student questions

FAQs

Is there a special free iPhone program just for students?
No. Students use the same federal Lifeline program as everyone else. Any site advertising a separate “student iPhone program” is misleading you — the application, benefits, and providers are identical.
Does a Pell Grant qualify me for a free iPhone?
No. Pell Grants qualified for the ACP (Affordable Connectivity Program), which ended June 1, 2024. They are not a Lifeline qualifying program. Students typically qualify via SNAP, Medicaid, or the income path instead.
Can I qualify if I live in a dorm?
Yes, if your dorm is your primary residence and you meet the income or program criteria. Note Lifeline is one benefit per household — if roommates share expenses as one household, only one benefit applies.
I’m under 18. Can I apply?
Generally no — applicants must be 18+ (or an emancipated minor). A parent or guardian in the household can apply instead.
Will I lose my benefit after graduation?
Not automatically. As long as you still meet the eligibility criteria (income or program enrollment) and recertify annually, you keep the benefit — graduation itself doesn’t end it.
Can international students apply?
Lifeline requires a U.S. residential address and qualifying program/income documentation. Most international students won’t have qualifying U.S. benefit enrollment, but those meeting the income path with valid documentation can apply.
How long does it take to get the iPhone?
The online application takes ~20 minutes, approval is often instant, and phones typically ship in 7–14 business days. See the full walkthrough on our how-to-apply page.
